Windows Phone 7 First Impressions

E-mail Print PDF

So I got in touch with Brandon Watson and have already worked on developing GetHuman for Windows Phone 7 and also a few other apps. The real reason I am writing this article is to express how impressed I am with Windows Phone 7 after switching from WebOS.

I have been a pretty loyal fan on Palm and now HP in WebOS's dying days. I have gone from a Palm Pre, to a Sprint Franken Pre+, and lastly a Sprint Franken Pre 2. If you are still a die hard fan of WebOS and still have your Palm Pre do yourself a favor and switch to Windows Phone 7. After just playing with the HTC Mazaa development device I got from Microsoft, I have already gone out and bought myself a Sprint HTC Arrive to replace my aging Palm Pre 2. I must admit though, Sprint yet again desperately needs to support better phones. I love Windows Phone 7, but one device is hardly a selection.

WP7 simply works. The device loads apps blazing fast, performs almost every need out of the box, and has better hardware than any of the Pre devices I have owned. Also on a minor note, I played with my new HTC Arrive before updating it to the "Mango" update and it does make a world of a difference. If you played with a WP7 device before this latest update, forget every impression you have a give it another try. I can completely understand why I remembered WP7 as half finished before, but now it is definitely finished and even starting to incorporate some of the best parts of WebOS like style. The multitasking isn't quite the same, but it does have a very familiar card look and gets hours longer battery life than the Pre 2.

For more info on the "Mango" update and a few links I found helpful when switching from WebOS to WP7 check out these links:

Lastly here is a few new phones that one could only dream Sprint might get: HTC Radar and HTC Titan

On another note, I will post more on updates as I finish up the first apps for Windows Phone 7. As always if you have an suggestion or idea for an app, drop me a comment.

WebOS Is Dying... Again

E-mail Print PDF

With the latest news that HP is planning on discontinuing production of WebOS devices all together I have decided to stop working on any WebOS projects until a future device would surface or become viable. However if you are looking to purchase a HP Touchpad for a super price, make sure to check out the fire sale pricing going on at pretty much every store until they sell out. Check out more about this at the Register.

The 16gb HP Touchpad appears to be going for $99 and $149 for the 32gb. I personally have been working with a 32gb loaner device from HP for development and was excited to release a tablet version of the GetHuman app, although unless they plan on selling me this loaner for the firesale price, I won't have a device to test on and will sadly stop developing on WebOS projects.

On a possibly more positive note, I did notice the tweet of a Microsoft rep that was willing to help out any developers looking to switch to Windows Phone 7. Check out Brandon Watson's tweet if you are in a similar situation. I hope he can deliver me a Sprint phone to test on and I would be more than happy to port my WebOS work to a platform that doesn't just abandon it's users so fast.

GetHuman for WebOS

E-mail Print PDF

GetHuman for WebOSThe first version of GetHuman for WebOS devices has been released to the Palm app store. The GetHuman app has customer service phone numbers, email addresses, chat options, and more for major businesses, and the steps for getting a live person - just like the web site. But unlike the site, the app is on your phone, meaning that you can contact customer support from wherever you are. The app dials the phone number for you after suggesting how to talk to a real person. The app also updates itself weekly from the GetHuman.com, the collaborative consumer information database.

The first version allows for you to call the contact, add to your phonebook, look up more contact methods, and get a direct link to that company's GetHuman.com page. I'm already working at incorporating several of the updates and suggestions people have commented about in the Palm app store and would definitely welcome any more comments and suggestions!

Head over to the Palm app store now and get the app for free here:

If you get the app make sure to rate the app and let us know how we can improve it!

Getting Bluetooth To Work

E-mail Print PDF

It seems like almost every Bluetooth adapter available uses its own proprietary junk software that doesn't work. The new Kensington Bluetooth 2.0 USB adapter that I bought is no different. Well this got me to wondering, why install extra software? Why have extra programs boot up and run in the background when Windows has all of this already running? Well the simple answer is to use Windows Bluetooth stack to run your adapter. But how to do this is the real question. After digging around online I found this handy little hack to get Bluetooth working the way it should the first time it was plugged in.
